Setting your mind on healing

A large portion of getting well is your perspective.

Romans 12:2

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

There is so much power in the mind. That is why in Romans, Paul reminds us that we must be TRANSFORMED by the RENEWAL of our mind. That area of testing actually helps reassure us what God’s will is and what is good and perfect. How many times do people ask me if they are ever going to get better? A lot. There are always times in repair that it feels like it’s never going to end. During those times, people are tempted to curse God and their practitioner and badmouth them saying they didn’t know what they were doing. Trust me, I’ve been there. I never cursed God because I have a Holy fear of him, but I did cry out and ask, “Why?” There were many tear-filled days that I chose to show no one except the Lord. There were days when I really didn’t feel like praying because I felt like I was abandoned. Those were the days when renewing my mind was the most important. They also were the day that the Lord gave me some incredible revelations.

The world wants you to run to a quick fix. It wants you to curse God, to see the natural health field as quacks, and to give up before you ever started. The world also wants you to think only of yourself and follow your heart. Scripture says that the heart is deceitful above all else. When we are going to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, we need to say no to what the world is shoving at us and tune into how we were created.

This is not a post about some strange energy/mind thing. I am not that kind of Holistic Health Practitioner. I am a Christian and I go by the word of God. The word of God talks about the power of the mind and the tongue. That is what this post is about. Let’s start with studies for our friends who aren’t buying it.

Studies show that those who think positively recover much quicker than those who think negatively. In fact, according to Hopkin’s medicine, “Here’s heartwarming news: People with a family history of heart disease who also had a positive outlook were one-third less likely to have a heart attack or other cardiovascular event within five to 25 years than those with a more negative outlook.” That is pretty profound. Why is that? Negative thoughts lead to anxiety and anxiety puts stress on the body, which suppresses the immune system and puts stress on the organs in our body. Our body is not meant to be in fight or flight mode for a long time. That is one of the reasons that we have seen a rise in illnesses recently. There is way too much stress on our nation, our children, and families in the last few years. Most of it was completely unnecessary, which has led to a crisis.

Studies also show that there really is power in the tongue. In this particular study, it showed that pathological worry was reduced by thought replacement. This had to deal with those with an anxiety disorder. Now, we know that anxiety and stress lead to health issues. I touched on that already. Out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks. This is why it is important to take your thoughts captive as soon as they come. Again, that is scriptural and scientific at the same time. Did you know that good science points to our good God?

What does this all have to do with healing? Healing has to start with admitting where we have faulted. Taking responsibility over our health is the first step. Then, taking authority over our minds is the next step. I am writing about the second step first because the mind is so important. I can tell where someone is when they come into my office. They are the negative ones that have been dealing with illness for years. Some of us struggle with pessimism because of our genetic makeup and it takes a little more surrendering than those of our dear “natural” positivity thinkers. I was right there, so please don’t check out. It was the Lord who convicted me of my pessimism. Pessimists are skeptical of everything you say. I have to assure them more often to stick with it. I have to speak life over them and give them scripture to cling to. What is sad though is that they are usually the people who strive so hard, yet make small strides in their health, because they cannot get over the battle in their mind.

It helps having a support system, but what if you are the one doing this on your own? You can still battle your illness and take back your health! It starts with making up your mind to do the work and to believe that you can get there. Making up your mind to do the work is no easy task, because the mind is a battlefield. Bach flower remedies are fantastic for the psychological war. They are flower essences that help calm the mind. Flowers and herbs are fantastic for the neurological system. It is why I started in herbalism before becoming a Holistic Health Practitioner. They were created by God. It is no wonder they are so nourishing and medicinal.

Battling the thoughts that intrude your mind is not easy and you do need help. I am a support system for my clients. I don’t just educate them, I tell them that they can text or email me with questions or concerns. I pray over my clients all the time, in person and when they aren’t with me. I know that there is a battle and I want them to be like me, on the other side ready to help others in their time of need. That is why I strongly suggest that if you don’t believe what I’m saying, test it. Start speaking positive things over your life and see how your perspective and health change. There are going to be days when you do better than others, but that is when God’s grace covers those who love him.

Hebrews 4:16

“16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

He is here for the broken and hurting. He does desire for you to be whole and complete. He has created all of us whether we choose him back or not. He does have a plan for us if we choose to follow him and he will reveal so much to you when you seek him during your time of need. There you will find peace and rest for your weary soul. It all starts with making the decision to take your thoughts captive and start speaking life of yourself. I have taught my boys that we speak life not death. We want to speak encouraging words and healing words over ourselves.
