Mighty Magnesium

Magnesium is a mineral that is essential to our bodies for many reasons. It has been shown in studies to protect the heart, build the bones, protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, sleep, bowels, and so much more. It has been shown to help in homeostasis, neutralizing free radicals in the body and protecting against oxidative stress. In America, so many are ridden with disease and ailments simply because minerals are not balanced. Deficiencies run rampant here because of poor diet choices, poor soil (due to commercial agriculture and depletion of essential minerals), overuse of medications, vaccinations, and other environmental factors. While you can find Magnesium in some foods, it is not nearly what it used to be years ago. If our soils have been depleted of the very nutrients that our bodies need to stay healthy, then how can we maintain healthy magnesium levels?

There are a few ways to help boost Magnesium levels:

  1. Supplement with HIGH QUALITY and good sourced Magnesium. There are many forms of Magnesium and each can play a different role in the body, but the main point is that our bodies are so deficient most times, that any pure source is needed. This is why I am very picky about the supplements that I use with my clients. I do not want my clients relying on supplements long term, but this one that even I take every day because of the lack of volume in our foods and environment.

  2. Epsom Salts. You can use this in a bath, foot bath, or even replenishing your garden soil with it. It is a great way to get some Magnesium into the body with out ingesting it.

  3. Magnesium Lotions, oils, and sprays. Our skin absorbs what is put on it. That’s why it’s important to be careful what you put on your skin. I use a lotion with my clients who have children or prefer to do something topical in addition. It is perfect for muscle cramps, sleep, and relaxation.

Some factors that play a role in Magnesium depletion:

  1. Soil depletion, like discussed above.

  2. Stress has been shown to deplete Magnesium significantly.

  3. Medications. This is a HUGE culprit. Certain medications block mineral absorption and can lead to severe deficiencies.

  4. Taking too much Vitamin D. Yup, you heart me correctly. First, let me address that vitamin D in large doses should not be taken. Period. It can cause calcification of the kidneys. It can also severely deplete Magnesium in the body. It also makes a difference the source of Vitamin D. Get out in the sun or take some cod liver oil. Those are your BEST option in Vitamin D.

Some symptoms of Magnesium deficiency:

  1. Muscle weakness or cramping. Do you get muscle cramps at night? Magnesium is usually the culprit.

  2. Neurological disorder. Since Magnesium is a neuro-protector, during times of stress, more Magnesium is needed. Stress cause oxidative stress on the body, and in return, depletes Magnesium and other essential minerals to try to cope.

  3. Gastrointestinal issues. It is involved in nearly every metabolic process in the body. If you have constipation, bloating, diarrhea, then chances are you need Magnesium.

  4. Seizures.

  5. Tingling sensation.

  6. Headaches. Headaches are a sign that something is off in the body. Do not pop a tylonol. That is not helping yourself. You need to fix the root of the problem.

  7. Anxiety and depression.

  8. Neverousness.

  9. Chest pain/cardiac issues.

  10. Sleep disorders.
